Book the first groom early
A puppy who meets the clippers, the dryer and the table while young usually grows into a dog who tolerates a full groom. Many groomers offer short introduction sessions for puppies once their vaccinations are done, which cost less than a full groom.
Ask how they dry
Cage dryers left running unattended have injured dogs, particularly flat-faced breeds that overheat quickly. Ask whether your dog will be hand-dried or, if a cage dryer is used, whether it is unheated and someone stays with the dog.
Matted coats are a welfare call
If a coat is badly matted, a good groomer will shave it short rather than spend hours brushing out painful knots. It can look drastic, but it is kinder to the dog, and regular brushing at home between appointments is what stops it happening again.
