Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer
Dog training is not regulated in the UK, so the title alone tells you nothing. A trainer on the Animal Behaviour and Training Council register, or a member of the APDT or IMDT, has been assessed and has agreed to a code of practice. Ask which body they belong to, then check the register yourself.
Class or one-to-one?
A puppy class is the usual place to start: it covers the basics and teaches your puppy to concentrate around other dogs. A dog that barks or lunges at other dogs usually does better one-to-one first, because a busy class can make the problem worse before anyone has worked on it.
Training and behaviour are different jobs
A trainer teaches skills such as sit, recall and loose-lead walking. Fear, aggression or a sudden change in behaviour is work for a clinical animal behaviourist, usually on referral from your vet, who will want to rule out pain or illness first.
