Buying wet dog food in larger multipacks can genuinely lower the cost per meal, but only if you compare price per kilogram rather than the headline price on the front of the box. Here is how to buy well, how to store it properly once opened, and where the savings actually come from.
Why bulk buying wet food can save money
Multipacks of tins or pouches are usually cheaper per portion than buying single items, because the packaging and handling cost is spread across more units. For a household feeding wet food regularly, particularly with more than one dog, this difference adds up meaningfully over a month.
The saving is not automatic, though. A bulk pack of a premium recipe can still cost more per portion than a smaller pack of a budget one, so the format alone does not guarantee the best value; the recipe inside the pack matters just as much as the pack size.
How to actually compare the cost
Work out the price per kilogram, or per pouch if portions are a standard size, rather than comparing the total price of packs with different numbers of tins or different tin sizes. Dividing the total price by the total weight takes a couple of seconds and tells you far more than the shelf price alone.
It is also worth checking how much food is actually inside a tin or pouch once you account for gravy or jelly, since two products of the same headline weight can contain quite different amounts of solid food. Reading the guaranteed analysis alongside the price gives a fairer comparison than price alone.
Storing bulk wet food properly
Unopened tins and pouches generally keep for a long time at room temperature, which is exactly what makes buying in bulk practical, but once opened they need refrigerating and using within a few days, so buying more than you can get through before it spoils defeats the purpose.
If you have more than one dog, larger tins opened and split between bowls waste less than opening several smaller ones, while a single-dog household may find smaller multipacks more practical even if the per-kilogram price is marginally higher, simply because less goes to waste.
