Buying wet dog food in bulk
Buying wet dog food by the case or multipack, rather than single tins or pouches, usually brings the price per portion down — but not always by as much as the packaging suggests, so it is worth comparing the actual cost per kilogram or per pouch rather than assuming bigger always means cheaper.
Why multipacks usually cost less per portion
Larger packs generally cost less to produce and distribute per individual portion than single tins, and that saving is often passed on, at least partly, in the shelf price. A 12-pack of pouches will typically work out cheaper per pouch than buying the same twelve individually, though the size of that saving varies noticeably between brands and ranges.
It is not a universal rule, though. Some premium ranges keep their per-portion price close to constant regardless of pack size, and a special offer on single tins can occasionally undercut a multipack's usual price. Checking the actual figures rather than assuming is the only way to know for a specific product.
How to compare prices properly
Work out the price per kilogram, or per individual pouch or tin if the portion sizes are consistent, rather than comparing total pack prices against each other. A large multipack of small pouches and a case of bigger tins can look similar in total price while working out very differently once you break it down per portion.
It is also worth comparing like for like in terms of quality and recipe, not just format. A budget range bought in a large pack will always beat a premium range bought in a large pack on price, but that is a comparison of ingredients and formulation, not really about pack size itself.
What to check before buying a large amount at once
Wet food has a shelf life once opened, typically a day or two in the fridge, so buying a large amount only saves money if you can realistically get through it before it goes off — a large case is not a bargain if half of it ends up wasted. Storage space matters too, particularly for larger dogs eating bigger portions.
If you are trying a new food for the first time, buy a small amount first rather than a full case, in case your dog does not take to it or it does not agree with them. Committing to a large multipack of an untested food is the most common way buying in a large quantity ends up costing more, not less.
