Buying cat food in bulk: what to check first
Buying cat food in a larger bag or a multi-pack case can bring the price down, but only if you actually check the price per kilogram or per pouch rather than the headline price, and only if you can store it properly before it goes stale. It is not automatically the cheaper option just because the pack is bigger.
Where bulk buying genuinely saves money
Larger bags of dry food and multi-buy cases of wet pouches or trays are the two places a genuine saving is most likely, since the packaging and handling cost per unit tends to fall as the pack size grows. How much you actually save varies by brand and format, so it is worth comparing rather than assuming bigger is always better value.
Working out the real saving means comparing price per kilogram for dry food, or price per pouch or per 100g for wet food, across the different pack sizes on offer — not just looking at which single price tag is lowest.
What to check before you buy
Check the best-before date on a large bag of dry food, particularly if you only have one cat, since a bag bought to last several months may lose freshness or start to smell stale well before it is finished, especially once opened. Dry food is generally best used within a matter of weeks of opening rather than months.
Storage matters as much as the purchase itself. An airtight container in a cool, dry place keeps dry food fresher for longer than leaving the original bag open or resealed with a clip, and wet food should always be refrigerated once opened and used within the time stated on the pack.
When bulk isn't the better option
If you are trying a new food to see whether it suits your cat, a smaller pack makes more sense than committing to a large one you may not finish if it does not agree with them. The same goes for a kitten who will need to move onto a different recipe as they grow, or a cat with a health condition where your vet may want to adjust the diet.
A single-cat household working through a large bag slowly is more at risk of the food losing freshness before it is finished than a multi-cat household getting through the same bag quickly, which is worth factoring in alongside the price per kilogram.
