Why slow feeding matters

Dogs that inhale their food swallow a lot of air, which can lead to gulping, hiccups, regurgitation and — in deep-chested breeds — a raised risk of bloat.

A slow feeder forces them to nudge kibble out of the ridges, which paces the meal naturally and gives a bit of enrichment at the same time.

Keeping it clean

Look for food-grade silicone or BPA-free plastic that’s dishwasher-safe — the grooves are where food gets stuck, so easy cleaning matters.

Start with a simpler maze for beginners and work up to trickier patterns once your dog gets the hang of it.

Matching the maze to your dog’s face

Match the maze depth to the nose. A deep spiral suits a long-muzzled dog and is close to impossible for a pug, a boxer or a French bulldog, who need a shallow pattern they can actually reach into — otherwise the bowl simply stops them eating rather than slowing them down.

Check it holds your dog’s normal portion, because many slow feeders are smaller inside than they look. Non-slip feet or a weighted base do most of the remaining work: a determined dog will push a light bowl round the kitchen until the maze stops mattering.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Can slow feeders help prevent bloat?

By slowing eating and reducing swallowed air, they can lower one of the risk factors for bloat — especially in large, deep-chested breeds. They’re a sensible aid, not a guarantee; ask your vet if you’re worried.

Are they suitable for wet food?

Many are. Shallow-maze designs work well for wet or raw food, while deeper mazes suit dry kibble. Check the product page.

Will my dog get frustrated?

Start with an easier pattern. Most dogs quickly enjoy the challenge — it gives them a job to do at dinnertime.
