The beef in this range is the odd one out, and not in a way the shelf makes obvious. Where the chicken, lamb and salmon recipes are built on brown rice, this one has no grain in it at all: sweet potato and potato carry the carbohydrate, with peas and carrot behind them.

The 50% beef is freshly prepared beef (28%), dried beef (19%) and beef fat (3%), with Sweet potato at 26% and Peas at 7.5%. It is the highest protein of the adult recipes in the range at Crude Protein 29%, with Crude Fat 13% and Crude Fibre 5%. Calcium sits at 1% and Phosphorous at 0.5%. Prebiotics are in at Fructooligosaccharides 96mg/kg and Mannanoligosaccharides 24mg/kg, and the brand says it is gently cooked at 82 degrees.

Switching to this from the chicken or lamb in the same range is a bigger change than it looks. Those are brown rice recipes; this one is grain free and runs several points higher in protein, so a dog moved straight across can loosen up for a few days. Change it over slowly. The same applies in reverse. It is also a working dog food, which is why it carries no VAT, and the feeding table is written for a dog that is working, so an ordinary pet at the same bodyweight will usually need to sit near the bottom of its band rather than the top.

Who it's for: working dogs that do not get on with grain, dogs that need a bit more protein than a standard maintenance food gives them, and anyone who has been paying premium grain free prices and would rather not.

Common questions

Is this really grain free?

Yes. There is no rice, wheat, barley or oats in it. The carbohydrate is sweet potato at 26% plus potato, with peas at 7.5%. That is genuinely different from the chicken and lamb recipes in the same range, which are brown rice based.

How much do I feed?

The published guide runs 1-5kg at 35-110g a day, 5-10kg at 110-190g, 10-20kg at 190-315g, 20-30kg at 315-430g and 40kg and over at 530g and up. These are amounts for a working dog, so start low for a pet and adjust to body condition.

The 30 to 40kg row looks wrong. Is it?

It looks like it. As published it reads 430-450g, which leaves an odd gap before the 530g and over band. We have quoted it exactly as the label gives it rather than quietly fixing it. For a dog that size, feed to body condition and check the bag.

Is it a complete food?

Yes. It is described as a hypoallergenic grain free complete recipe, high in protein, for working and sporting dogs.

Why is there no vitamin declaration on this one?

The brand publishes the full vitamin and trace element list for its rice recipes but not for this one, and no stockist we could read carries it either. It is on the bag. If you need the figures before buying, they are worth asking the manufacturer for.
