Cheap dry dog food that's still worth feeding

Cheap dry dog food exists at every price point in our range, but the bag price on its own is not the useful number — price per kilo, and how much of that kilo is actual meat and usable nutrition rather than filler, tells you far more about whether a cheap food is genuinely good value or just a smaller bag.

Compare price per kilo, not price per bag

A 15kg sack that costs more than a 2kg bag can still work out cheaper per meal, because a dog eats a fixed amount of food regardless of bag size, and a bigger bag almost always has a lower price per kilo. Do the sum on the actual weight before deciding one bag is cheaper than another.

It is also worth checking the feeding guide on the back of the bag rather than assuming all dry foods feed the same amount per day. A more calorie-dense food can mean smaller daily portions, which changes how far a bag actually goes and can make a slightly pricier bag cheaper in practice.

What a genuinely affordable food still needs

A cheap dry food does not need to be a premium recipe to be a reasonable choice, but it should still list a named meat or meat meal near the top of the ingredients, meet the nutritional standards for your dog's life stage, and suit your dog without causing loose stools or excessive wind — a food that upsets your dog's stomach is not actually cheap once you account for the wasted bag.

Our dry-food range includes value everyday options through to grain-free and breed-specific formulas, all filterable by price, so you can find what genuinely fits your budget without guessing from the bag alone.

Where the savings genuinely come from

Buying the largest bag size your storage and use-by timeline allow is usually the single biggest saving, provided you can get through it while it is still fresh — an opened bag does not last forever. Switching food suddenly to save money can also upset a dog's stomach, so any change, cheap or otherwise, is best done gradually over a week or so.

If your dog has a health condition that affects what it can eat, a genuinely cheap food is one that suits your dog reliably, not necessarily the lowest price on the shelf — check with your vet if you are ever unsure whether a cheaper switch is suitable for your particular dog.

Common questions

Is cheap dry dog food bad for dogs?
Not automatically. Price reflects ingredients, branding and portion size rather than safety — all complete dog foods sold in the UK have to meet minimum nutritional standards. Check the ingredients list and how your own dog does on it rather than assuming price alone tells you the quality.
How do I compare the price of different dog food bags?
Divide the price by the bag weight in kilos to get a price per kilo, then check the feeding guide for your dog's weight to see how many days a bag will actually last. Two bags priced the same can go very different distances depending on how much you need to feed per day.
Should I switch to a cheaper food to save money?
You can, but do it gradually over a week or more by mixing the new food in increasing amounts with the old, rather than swapping overnight, which is far more likely to upset your dog's stomach whatever the price of the new food.
Does a bigger bag of dog food go off before I finish it?
It can if it sits open for months, so only buy a bag large enough that you will get through it in a reasonable time. Keep it sealed and in a cool, dry place, and check the use-by date before buying if you are choosing a very large sack.
