Dry dog food in 12kg bags

A 12kg bag of dry dog food is a family-sized pack, usually working out cheaper per kilogram than the smaller 2kg or 3kg bags of the same recipe. It suits a medium to large dog, or more than one dog, who will get through it within a few weeks of opening, rather than a single small breed that would still be eating from the same bag months later.

Why the price per kilo drops at this size

Larger packaging costs less per kilogram to produce and ship than lots of small bags of the same food, and that saving is generally passed through in the shelf price. A 12kg bag is very rarely the cheapest way to buy a food overall, but it is usually meaningfully cheaper per kilo than buying the same recipe in 2kg bags six times over.

That is worth checking rather than assuming, since not every brand prices its pack sizes in a straight line, and a 12kg bag on special offer can sometimes cost about the same per kilo as a mid-sized bag. Comparing the price per kilo, not just the headline price, is the only way to know for a specific recipe.

Who a 12kg bag actually suits

A single medium or large adult dog eating a normal daily portion will typically get through a 12kg bag in around four to six weeks, which is a reasonable window to keep dry food fresh in a sealed container. A household with two or more dogs on the same food gets through it faster still, which makes the larger bag even better value.

For a small or toy breed dog eating only a small daily portion, a 12kg bag can sit open for months, and kibble does lose freshness and some of its appeal over that time even when sealed properly. A smaller bag, bought more often, usually makes more sense for a small dog eating alone.

Keeping it fresh once it is open

Transfer opened dry food into an airtight container rather than leaving the original bag rolled up and clipped, since a proper seal keeps out moisture and slows the fats in the kibble going stale. Keep it somewhere cool and dark rather than next to a radiator or in direct sun.

If a large bag has been open for a long time and your dog seems to be going off a food they used to eat readily, staleness is a reasonable first thing to suspect, well before assuming anything is wrong with the dog itself.

Common questions

Is a 12kg bag always the cheapest option?
Not always. It is usually cheaper per kilogram than the same recipe in smaller bags, but that is worth checking against the actual shelf price rather than assumed, since offers and pack pricing vary between brands and even between recipes from the same brand.
How long does a 12kg bag last a medium dog?
Roughly four to six weeks for a single medium-sized adult dog eating a typical daily amount, though this varies with the dog's size, activity level and the specific food's calorie density. Checking the feeding guide on the bag against your dog's actual weight is the most reliable way to estimate it for your own dog.
Does a bigger bag mean the food goes stale before it's finished?
It can, particularly for a small dog eating slowly through it, but storing it in an airtight container out of light and heat slows that down considerably. If a bag genuinely sits open for several months, buying a smaller size next time is usually the better call.
