How catnip works (and why some cats ignore it)
The active compound, nepetalactone, binds to receptors in a cat’s nose and triggers a brief euphoric response — rolling, cheek-rubbing and playful kicking. It’s entirely safe and non-addictive, and the effect wears off in around ten minutes, after which cats are immune for an hour or so.
Sensitivity is inherited, so roughly a third of cats feel nothing — and kittens under about three months usually don’t respond at all. If yours is in the unmoved minority, try a silvervine toy instead, which works on many catnip-immune cats.
Getting the most from a catnip toy
Catnip loses its punch as the oils evaporate, so store toys in a sealed tub between play sessions and choose refillable kicker toys you can top up. A “kicker” — a long, stuffed toy — lets a cat grab with the front paws and rabbit-kick with the back, which is the natural hunting-kill motion they love.
Use catnip toys to make exercise appealing for lazy or overweight indoor cats, or to draw a nervous cat out of its shell.

Is catnip safe for cats?
Yes — it’s non-toxic and non-addictive. Cats self-regulate and simply lose interest after a few minutes; the worst a greedy cat might get from eating a lot is a mildly upset tummy.
