What the large breed range actually changes
A large-breed puppy that grows too fast is at more risk of developmental joint problems than one whose growth is steady, which is why the puppy recipes in this range are formulated with that controlled growth rate in mind rather than simply maximising calories. On the adult side, Arden Grange Adult Dog Large Breed Chicken & Rice is the standard recipe, with Adult Dog Large Breed Sensitive Fish as the alternative for a dog who does poorly on chicken or needs a gentler protein source. Both are built around the same large-breed logic of steady energy and joint-friendly nutrition rather than a rebranded standard recipe.
Choosing between the two adult recipes
Chicken & Rice is the everyday choice for a large dog with no particular sensitivity, and it is the recipe most owners start with. The Sensitive Fish recipe is worth reaching for instead if your dog has shown signs of a food sensitivity in the past, or if you are simply trying a different protein source for variety.
As with any large-breed food, keep an eye on body condition rather than the bag's feeding guide alone — big dogs vary hugely in build, and the guide is a starting point to adjust from, not a fixed number.

- This varies by breed and individual growth rate, and large breeds generally take longer to reach adult size than small ones. Arden Grange's own guidance on the pack is the right starting point, and your vet can advise if you are unsure when your particular dog is ready to switch.
- Is large breed food only about kibble size?
- No — the kibble is often larger to suit a big dog's mouth, but the more important differences are in the calorie density and mineral balance, which are set to support steady rather than rapid growth and to help manage the load on a large dog's joints over its lifetime.
- Can a medium-sized dog eat the large breed recipe?
- It will not do them harm, but it is formulated with a large dog's growth rate and joint needs in mind, so there is little benefit in feeding it to a dog who will not reach a large adult size. A standard adult recipe suits a medium dog better.
