Jelly, gravy, chunks or pâté?

Cats are poor drinkers, and wet food does most of the work
A cat fed only dry food has to make up the whole water deficit at the bowl, and many simply do not. Wet food arrives at roughly 75 to 80% moisture, so a cat eating it is taking in a substantial part of its daily water without going near a bowl at all.
That is the strongest practical argument for wet food and it is not about the recipe. If your cat eats dry food and will not change, a fountain is worth trying — moving water gets far more interest than a still bowl, which is a hangover from avoiding stagnant water in the wild.
Complete or complementary, and why so many pouches are the second
A large share of wet cat food, particularly the sauce-heavy single pouches and anything sold as a "treat" or "topper", is complementary. It is designed to go alongside a complete food, and a cat fed only on it over months will be short of something.
Cats also have requirements a dog does not — taurine above all, which they cannot make in sufficient quantity and must get from their diet. A complete cat food handles that. This is the main reason a cat must never be fed dog food for any length of time.

Common questions
How many pouches a day does a cat need?
It depends on the cat’s weight and the recipe, and the pack’s feeding guide is the place to start. A common range for an average adult cat is three to four 85g pouches a day if that is all they eat.
Is wet food better than dry for cats?
For water intake, clearly. Cats drink poorly and wet food is around 75 to 80% moisture. Plenty of cats do well on dry or on a mix; the thing to watch is that a dry-fed cat is actually drinking.
My cat only licks the gravy. Is that a problem?
It means they are getting less of the nutrition than you think. Try a pâté or mousse, where there is no sauce to separate from the meat.
Can I feed my cat dog food?
Not as a diet. Cats need taurine and several other nutrients at levels dog food is not formulated to provide, and a long-term deficiency is serious. A stolen mouthful is not a crisis.
