Most plush toys fail at the seam, which is why a determined chewer can gut one in an afternoon and why the stuffing ends up across the carpet rather than inside the toy. Tuffy build the other way round: layers of material bonded together, several rows of stitching down every join, and protective webbing laid over the seams, so there is no single line of thread holding the whole thing shut.

This one is a squid, in purple, just under 40 cm long including the tentacles, and those trailing arms are much of the point. They give a dog something to grip, shake and carry without a hard core to crack a tooth against. It floats, so it works for water retrieves off a beach or a lake edge, and it is machine washable, which counts for a toy that gets dragged through mud and then onto the sofa. Air dry rather than tumble.

• Floats, for water play and retrieves
• Machine washable, air dry

No toy is indestructible, and this one is not either. Tuffy toys hold up far longer than ordinary plush, but a dedicated power chewer will eventually get through one. Check the seams after every rough session and retire it as soon as the outer layer is opened, rather than waiting for stuffing to appear. It is the same toy, weighed twice.

Who it's for: Owners of enthusiastic chewers who want a soft tug, fetch and water toy that lasts longer than a week.
