An ordinary plush toy lasts a determined dog about four minutes: one seam goes, the stuffing comes out, and what is left is a hazard rather than a toy. The construction here is a direct answer to that. Instead of a single layer of fabric closed with one line of stitching, the body is built from several bonded layers, sewn with multiple rows, and the seams are reinforced with webbing where the pulling actually happens.

That layering is why it behaves differently in play. A dog trying to open a seam has to get through more than one thing at once, and the webbing keeps the stitching from unzipping the moment a single thread gives. It also floats, which turns it into a river and lake toy rather than a living-room-only one, and it goes in the machine and comes out clean — air dry rather than tumble dry, which is the part people miss.

• Roughly 35.6 x 22.9 x 10.2cm
• Weighs about 250g
• Multiple bonded layers with several rows of stitching
• Protective webbing reinforcing the seams
• Floats, so it works in water
• Machine washable, air dry
• Made in China

No plush toy is indestructible. Tuffy toys hold up far better than ordinary soft toys, and a dedicated shredder will still eventually find a way in. Check it over regularly, and once the outer layer opens, retire it rather than letting the inner layers be swallowed. Supervise water play as you would with any toy that floats away from you.

Who it's for: Owners of enthusiastic chewers who are tired of binning a soft toy a week and want one that survives fetch, tug and the river.
