Ordinary plush lasts about one enthusiastic session with a dog who likes to shake a toy apart, because the seam is a single line of thread holding two thin panels together. Tuffy build the other way round: layers of material bonded into one, several rows of stitching instead of one, and webbing laid over the seams where the pulling force actually goes.

The junior size makes this a sensible pick for smaller dogs and for gentler play with a big one, and the stegosaurus shape gives plenty of plates and a tail to take hold of. It floats, which turns it into a river or paddling-pool toy as well as an indoor one, and it goes through the washing machine when it comes back muddy. Air dry it afterwards rather than putting it in the tumble dryer.

• Multiple bonded layers rather than single-layer plush
• Several rows of stitching along each seam
• Protective webbing over the seams
• Floats, so it works for water retrieves
• Machine washable, air dry
• 35.6 x 22.9 x 10.2 cm, around 250 g

Tough is not indestructible. Tuffy toys hold up far better than standard plush, but no soft toy survives a dedicated power chewer left alone with it for an afternoon. Treat this as a shared-play and carry toy, supervise heavy chewers, and take it away once a seam opens rather than waiting for the stuffing to start coming out.

Who it's for: Small and medium dogs who go through ordinary plush toys quickly, and owners who want something washable that also floats.
