Distance is the hard part of recall training. A dog who sits perfectly in the kitchen can be a different animal fifty metres away with a scent in their nose, and by the time you have caught up, the moment for a marker has long passed. A handset lets you make that mark instantly and at range, so the dog connects the signal to what they were doing rather than to your arrival some seconds later.

The set pairs an adjustable receiver collar with a handheld remote carrying an LCD screen, and gives you three modes: tone, vibration and static. Used well, the tone does most of the work, because it becomes a conditioned marker or a recall cue in its own right, the same job a whistle does but one you can send from further away than your lungs will reach. Read this before you buy. We will not pretend the static mode is uncontroversial. Collars that deliver a static pulse are restricted by law in parts of the UK, so check the rules where you live before ordering. More to the point, a shock rarely fixes the reason a dog is not coming back; it suppresses the behaviour in front of you and leaves the cause alone. If recall is the problem, a long line and a good trainer will beat this.
