This is the recipe for the dog that has slowed down, whether through age or through carrying too much. The brand's own description is blunter than most: older and overweight working dogs. It does two things at once, drops the energy and raises the joint support.

Chicken comes down to 38%, made up of Chicken (12%), Dried Chicken (20%), Chicken Fat (3.5%) and Chicken Liver (2.5%), with Brown Rice at 20%. Crude Fat is 10% against 15% on the standard chicken recipe, while Crude Protein stays up at 22.5%, which is the point: less energy, not less muscle. The joint ingredients go the other way, at Glucosamine 700mg/kg, MSM 700mg/kg and Chlondroitin Sulphate 523mg/kg, more than four times what the adult recipes carry. Brewer's yeast, dried seaweed, dandelion, marigold and peppermint appear here and nowhere else in the range.

Joint supplements in a food are support, not treatment. There is a lot of glucosamine and MSM in this bag by the standards of a dry food, and that is worth having for a stiff older dog, but a dog that has become suddenly lame or is struggling to rise needs a vet rather than a different bag of kibble. The other thing to know is that this is still a working dog food, sold VAT free on that basis, and the amounts printed on the pack assume a dog that is doing something. For an old dog on short walks, start below the figure on the bag and adjust by feel and by weight.

Who it's for: dogs past their prime that are still eating like they are not, overweight dogs that need the calories down without losing protein, and working dogs coming to the end of their career.

Is this a senior food or a light food?

Both, deliberately. The brand calls it Light & Mature and positions it at older, less active, arthritic or overweight dogs. The lever it pulls is fat, down to 10% from 15% on the standard chicken recipe, while keeping protein at 22.5%.

How much glucosamine is in it?

Glucosamine 700mg/kg and MSM 700mg/kg, with Chlondroitin Sulphate at 523mg/kg. The brand says that is more than four times the level in their adult recipes, and the published figures bear that out.

My dog is old but not overweight. Is this still right?

Possibly not. This food lowers the energy density, which is the wrong direction for a thin old dog. If yours is losing condition rather than gaining it, one of the adult recipes is likely the better fit.

Is it a complete food?

Yes. It is described as a naturally preserved, hypoallergenic, wheat gluten free natural complete dogfood for all breeds of older and overweight working dogs.

Why does the bag list things like dandelion and marigold?

They are in this recipe and not in the others, along with brewer's yeast and dried seaweed. The brand does not publish inclusion rates for them, so we will not pretend to know how much difference they make.

How much do I feed?

The bag gives grams per day by the dog's bodyweight: 35 to 115g for a 1 to 5kg dog, 115 to 190g at 5 to 10kg, 190 to 325g at 10 to 20kg, 325 to 440g at 20 to 30kg, 440 to 545g at 30 to 40kg, and 545g and up over 40kg. The brand prints its own caveat alongside it and it is worth taking seriously: breed, exercise level, neutered status and even how warm the house is all move the number, so start there and adjust to the dog in front of you.
