Long Dog Leads & Training Lines
A long line gives a dog room to make choices while you keep a safety net. It is the bridge between a short lead and reliable off-lead freedom, especially for recall training.

How much line do you need?
| Situation | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First recall sessions | 5m line | Enough freedom to practise without managing a large coil. |
| Open-field recall | 10m or longer line | Creates real distance while keeping a physical backup. |
| Wet grass and mud | Coated or waterproof webbing | It drags cleanly and is easier to wipe than fabric tape. |
Clip it to a harness, not a collar
A running dog can reach the end of a long line with force. Attach it to a well-fitted harness so the stop is spread across the chest rather than concentrated on the neck.
Let the line trail in open space and gather it in loops rather than wrapping it around a hand. Gloves are useful with rope or webbing because a fast line can burn bare skin.
Reward the return, not just the response
Call once, move away and reward generously when the dog reaches you. The line prevents rehearsal of running off; the food, toy or release back to sniffing is what makes returning worthwhile next time.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
Is 5m or 10m better for recall training?
Start with 5m if handling a line is new to you. Move to 10m when the dog is responding reliably and you have enough open space to manage it safely.
Should a long line have a handle?
A handle is useful for deliberate holding, while a handle-free line is less likely to snag when trailing. Choose for how you plan to use it.
Can I use a retractable lead for recall training?
You can practise at distance with one, but a fixed long line gives clearer handling and avoids constant spring tension on the dog.
