Dog Training Treats
The best training treat is not the biggest or fanciest: it is small enough to swallow immediately, valuable enough to beat the distraction and easy to deliver at exactly the right moment.

Match the reward to the training
| Training job | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Many repetitions indoors | Tiny soft pieces | The dog can swallow and re-engage without stopping to chew. |
| Recall around distractions | A stronger-smelling meat treat | The reward has to beat whatever the dog was about to chase or investigate. |
| Watching calories | Low-calorie mini treats or measured kibble | Dozens of large rewards can quietly become another meal. |
Speed matters more than treat size
Training works when the reward follows the behaviour immediately. Small, soft treats keep the sequence moving; a crunchy biscuit that takes thirty seconds to eat turns one useful repetition into a pause.
For an intense session, break treats into smaller pieces before starting and take the amount from the dog’s next meal. Treats should normally stay within roughly ten percent of daily calories.
Use a reward ladder
Ordinary kibble may be enough in the kitchen, a soft treat in the garden and a high-value meat treat near other dogs. Saving the strongest reward for the hardest environment keeps it genuinely valuable.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
What makes a good dog training treat?
Small, soft, quick to swallow and valuable to that individual dog. Strong smell is often more motivating than a large portion.
How many training treats can I give?
Keep treats to about ten percent of daily calories and reduce the meal when a training session uses a lot. Tiny pieces let you reward more often without overfeeding.
Can I use normal dog food for training?
Yes. Kibble is ideal for easy work at home; keep higher-value treats for distractions and difficult behaviours.
