Dog Chew Toys
A chew toy should be bigger than the dog can swallow, firm enough for the way they chew and simple to inspect for damage. Pick the material by chewing style, then use shape, scent or food filling to keep it interesting.

Best scented chew toy
Bamboodles Fish Chew
Why we picked it

Best simple rubber bone
Bestpets Rubber Bone
Why we picked it
Solid rubber with no squeaker or stuffing means there's nothing inside it to break, which is the main reason a bone like this earns a place over a more elaborate toy. At 0.22kg it has enough weight to throw properly.

Choose a chew toy by chewing style
| Chewing style | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle mouthing and carrying | Softer textured rubber | It gives feedback without needing the hardest compound. |
| Steady recreational chewing | Solid rubber bone or ring | A simple one-piece shape has fewer seams and moving parts to attack. |
| Needs motivation to engage | Stuffable or scented chew | Food or scent gives the dog a reason to return to the toy. |
| Determined toy destroyer | Larger heavy-duty rubber with supervision | Tougher material buys time, but no toy is indestructible. |
Harder is not automatically safer
A toy should resist the dog without being so hard that it risks a tooth. If it has no give at all and cannot be marked with a thumbnail, choose carefully for a dog that bites down with force.
Puppies, older dogs and dogs with worn or damaged teeth need gentler materials. Ask a vet when there is existing dental pain or a fractured tooth.
Inspect before and after every session
Remove a toy when chunks, deep splits, exposed stuffing or loose parts appear. Choose a size that cannot pass behind the back teeth and size up for a dog that tries to swallow toys.
Stuffable toys can turn part of a meal into calm occupation. Count the filling within the daily food allowance and wash the inside thoroughly after use.
Shape matters as much as material
One-piece rings and bones give fewer seams to target, while ridges make a toy easier to hold between the paws. A stuffable centre adds motivation, but the opening must be large enough to clean and too small for the jaw to become trapped.
Long toys can suit dogs that like to carry, but dangling pieces and rope fibres need closer supervision. Choose the whole toy for the way the dog uses it, not for one durability claim on the label.
Rotate toys instead of escalating hardness
Chewing is easier to sustain when two or three safe textures are rotated rather than left out permanently. Put fetch and tug toys away after interactive play so they do not become unsupervised chew toys.
A sudden increase in destructive chewing can reflect boredom, stress, teething or discomfort. Equipment can redirect the behaviour, but persistent or unusual chewing deserves advice from a vet or accredited behaviourist.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
What is the safest material for a dog chew toy?
Appropriately sized rubber with some give is a useful starting point. The right choice still depends on bite strength, dental health and supervision.
Is any dog chew toy indestructible?
No. Heavy-duty materials can last longer, but every toy needs inspection and removal when pieces loosen or deep damage develops.
Can puppies use adult chew toys?
Choose a puppy-sized, gentler teething toy. Very hard adult products may be uncomfortable or unsuitable for changing teeth.
