Where dog gates earn their keep
Stairs are a real risk for young puppies, whose joints are still developing, and for senior or post-op dogs who shouldn’t be jumping up and down them. A gate also creates safe zones — keeping a dog out of the kitchen while you cook, away from the front door at delivery time, or settled in a calm space away from visitors.
For multi-pet homes, a gate can give a cat an escape route and a feeding station the dog can’t raid.
Pressure-fit vs screw-mounted
Pressure-fit gates wedge between two walls with no drilling — ideal for renters and for doorways, but not safe at the top of stairs, where a determined push could dislodge them. For the top of a staircase, always use a screw-mounted gate.
Measure the opening carefully, check the gate is tall enough that your dog can’t jump it, and look for a one-handed latch you can open while carrying things. Extra-wide and freestanding panel gates suit broad openings and open-plan rooms.

Common questions
Can I use a baby stair gate for a dog?
Often yes, for small and medium dogs — but check the height against a jumper and the bar spacing against a small dog. Large or powerful dogs may need a sturdier, taller pet-specific gate.
Pressure-fit or screw-fit gate for the stairs?
Always screw-mount a gate at the top of stairs — pressure-fit gates can be pushed loose and aren’t safe there. Pressure-fit is fine for doorways and the bottom of stairs.
How tall should a dog gate be?
Tall enough that your dog can’t jump or climb it. Standard gates suit most dogs, but agile or large breeds may need an extra-tall gate of 100cm or more.
