Quick-release is not optional
A cat collar must have a breakaway or quick-release buckle that opens when it catches on something. Cats climb, squeeze through gaps and hook collars on branches and fence panels, and a collar that will not give is a serious hazard.
If a seasonal collar you like does not have one, use it indoors for photographs only and put the everyday collar back on before your cat goes out.
Bells, charms and hunting
A bell on the collar gives garden birds a fighting chance and is worth having through autumn. Hanging charms are a different matter — anything dangling can be chewed or caught, so check it daily and remove it if your cat pays it any attention.

Common questions
How tight should a cat collar be?
Two fingers should slip flat between the collar and your cat’s neck. Check it weekly, and more often on a kitten — they grow faster than most people expect.
My cat hates collars. Any alternative?
A seasonal bow or bib that clips to the collar for a photograph and comes straight off again is usually better tolerated than a new collar. Some cats simply will not wear anything, and that is a reasonable answer.
Are these safe for kittens?
Only with a quick-release buckle and only supervised at first. Kittens get collars in their mouths and over a front leg, so watch closely for the first few days.
