Whisker fatigue and the case for shallow bowls
A cat’s whiskers are packed with nerve endings and stay highly sensitive. In a deep, narrow bowl those whiskers brush the sides at every mouthful, and some cats find it irritating enough to paw food onto the floor or leave the middle untouched.
A wide, shallow bowl lets your cat reach the food without bending their whiskers back, which often settles a fussy or messy eater. Look for a dish broad enough that the food sits in a single thin layer rather than a deep well.
Ceramic, steel or plastic — and keeping it clean
Glazed ceramic and stainless steel are the hygienic choices: both are non-porous and dishwasher-safe, so they do not harbour bacteria. Plastic scratches over time, and those micro-grooves can trap oils that trigger feline chin acne in some cats.
Raised or gently tilted bowls bring the food up to a more natural head height, which can help older cats and those that gulp and then bring food back up. Whatever the material, wash bowls daily — stale residue is a common reason a cat suddenly turns its nose up.

How do I know if my cat has whisker fatigue?
Telltale signs include pawing food out of the bowl, eating only from the centre, or backing away and meowing at a full dish. Switching to a wide, shallow bowl and seeing the behaviour stop is the simplest test.
Is a raised bowl better for my cat?
A slightly raised or tilted bowl can ease the angle of the neck and may help cats that regurgitate after eating or have arthritis. Keep the rise modest — only a few centimetres is needed.
Why does my cat dislike its plastic bowl?
Plastic scratches and can hold lingering smells and oils, and the contact is linked to chin acne in some cats. Many fussy eaters take to food more readily once moved to ceramic or stainless steel.
