Is ProDen PlaqueOff good for dogs?

ProDen PlaqueOff is a seaweed-based supplement added to a dog's food, marketed as a way to help slow how quickly new plaque and tartar build up on the teeth — it is not a cleaning product and does not remove tartar that is already there. Whether it is right for your dog is worth discussing with your vet, especially if they already have visible dental disease.

How it's said to work

The active ingredient is a seaweed called Ascophyllum nodosum, and the brand's own explanation is that it changes the composition of saliva in a way that makes it harder for new plaque to form and mineralise into tartar. It comes as a powder sprinkled on food, or baked into dental chews and treats, rather than something brushed on or applied directly to the teeth.

This is the mechanism as the brand describes it, not a claim we are making ourselves about clinical outcomes. It is a daily, ongoing supplement rather than a one-off fix, and it works alongside — not instead of — proper dental care.

What we stock, and when to see a vet instead

Our range includes PlaqueOff products in powder, mini bone and chew form for dogs. As with any supplement, it is meant to support ongoing dental care rather than replace it — regular brushing where your dog will tolerate it, dental chews, and check-ups with your vet all still matter.

If your dog already has heavy tartar build-up, red or bleeding gums, bad breath that has changed noticeably, or seems uncomfortable eating, that is a reason to see a vet for a proper dental check rather than starting a supplement and waiting to see if it helps. A supplement is not a substitute for treating dental disease that is already present.

Common questions

Does ProDen PlaqueOff remove tartar that's already on my dog's teeth?
No, it is marketed as slowing how quickly new plaque and tartar form, not removing what is already there. Existing tartar build-up needs proper veterinary dental treatment, which a supplement cannot replace.
How long does PlaqueOff take to work?
It is intended as a daily, ongoing supplement rather than something with an immediate effect, since it works on how new plaque forms over time rather than cleaning existing build-up. Results are also individual to each dog.
Can I use PlaqueOff instead of brushing my dog's teeth?
It is better used alongside dental care rather than instead of it. Brushing, where your dog will tolerate it, dental chews, and regular vet checks all still play a part in keeping their teeth and gums healthy.
My dog has bad breath and red gums — should I try PlaqueOff first?
See your vet first. Red or bleeding gums and a noticeable change in breath can mean dental disease that needs proper treatment, and starting a supplement without checking is not the same as addressing an existing problem.
Is PlaqueOff safe to give every day?
It is designed to be given daily as an ongoing part of a dog's routine, mixed with food or given as a chew, but check the pack for the amount suited to your dog's size and speak to your vet if your dog has any existing health condition.
