Why size alone isn't the right way to choose
A French Bulldog is short and broad rather than simply small — most adults sit somewhere around 8 to 14kg with a compact, muscular body, so a bed sized purely by weight bracket can end up too shallow or too narrow for how they actually lie. A dog that sprawls on its side needs width more than length, and it's worth measuring your own dog stretched out rather than trusting a generic size guide.
Bolster or donut-style beds with raised sides suit some Frenchies who like to lean or rest their head, but plenty of others prefer flat mats they can fully stretch out on, particularly in warm weather. Heat, breathing and why cooling matters more than usual
French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning their flatter face and shorter airway make it harder for them to cool down by panting compared with longer-nosed dogs. That makes bed choice more than a comfort question in warm weather: a breathable fabric, a raised or mesh base that lets air move underneath, or a cooling mat all help a dog who overheats more easily than most.
Avoid piling on thick padding or a heavily insulated bed for a Frenchie kept somewhere warm, and think about where the bed sits in the room — away from direct sun through a window and away from radiators makes a real difference on a hot day, regardless of how good the bed itself is.
Chewing, dribbling and the practical stuff
Frenchie puppies in particular are enthusiastic chewers, and a bed with removable stuffing or a loosely stitched cover won't survive long in a young dog's crate. A tightly constructed bed, or one built to be genuinely chew-resistant, saves money over the first year even if it costs more up front.
