The right bed for a German Shepherd
A German Shepherd needs a bed sized generously for a large, long-bodied dog, with enough padding to genuinely support the hips and joints rather than a thin layer that flattens under a dog this size within weeks. Getting the size and support right matters more here than the pattern on the cover.
Sizing it properly
Measure your dog lying fully stretched out, nose to tail, and add a reasonable margin — a German Shepherd curled into a bed built for its weight class rather than its actual length will spend its life half off the edge. Large or extra-large is the realistic starting size for most adult Shepherds.
Bear in mind a Shepherd's stretched-out sleeping position takes up considerably more floor space than its standing footprint, so measure the space you actually have available before choosing a size, not just the dog.
Why support matters for this breed
German Shepherds are prone to joint issues including hip dysplasia, which makes genuine support more important than it would be for a smaller, lighter breed. A supportive foam base that holds its shape under weight is worth prioritising over a decorative but thin cushion bed.
An older Shepherd, or one with a known joint problem, benefits from a bed low enough to get in and out of without a big step up, and firm enough underneath that it does not sink and strain the joints on the way down.
Practical extras worth considering
A washable cover is close to essential for a breed that sheds as much as a German Shepherd does, since the bed will need washing more often than most. Look specifically for a removable, machine-washable cover rather than a bed that has to be spot-cleaned in place.
A raised bolster edge along one or two sides suits a Shepherd who likes something to rest its head against, though some prefer a completely flat bed to stretch fully across, so this comes down to your own dog's habits rather than a universal rule.

Common questions
- What size bed does a German Shepherd need?
- Most adult German Shepherds need a large or extra-large bed, but the right size depends on your individual dog's length when stretched out rather than a fixed number. Measure your dog nose to tail and choose a bed with a genuine margin beyond that measurement.
- Do German Shepherds need orthopaedic beds?
- Not every Shepherd needs a specifically orthopaedic bed, but genuine support matters more for this breed than for many others because of its predisposition to hip and joint problems. A firm, supportive foam base is a sensible baseline even without a diagnosed joint condition, and becomes more important with age.
- How often should I wash a German Shepherd's bed?
- More often than you would for a lower-shedding breed, simply because of the amount of loose fur and dander this breed produces. A removable, machine-washable cover makes this realistic to keep up with, so it is worth prioritising over a bed that can only be spot-cleaned.
