Chicken is the safe bet of the range, and it is the one to start with if you have never given your cat a paste before. It squeezes out of the pouch smooth and strong smelling, which is the whole trick: a cat that ignores a biscuit will usually come over for something that smells like dinner.

The composition runs chicken, then chicken liver, pea protein and tapioca starch for texture, fish oil at 0.5% and guar gum. Taurine is added at 1000mg per kg. The analysis is crude protein 8%, crude fat 2%, crude fibre 1%, crude ash 0.5% and moisture 88%. The 75g pouch reseals, so you can use a strip of it and put the rest away.

Liver is doing more of the flavour than the name suggests. Chicken liver is the second ingredient in every paste in this range, chicken included, which is why they smell as strong as they do. Liver is rich, and a cat who gets through a lot of it in one sitting can end up with a loose day. Use it in strips rather than in pouchfuls and it is a non event.

Who it's for: Cats who need bribing, cats on tablets, lick mat owners, and kittens or older cats who do better with something soft. Also the first one to try if your cat has never had a paste and you do not want to waste three flavours finding out.

Common questions

Is this a meal or a treat?

A treat. The maker's guidance is to feed it by hand, in a bowl, as a mealtime topper, or rubbed into a lick mat, with fresh drinking water always available.

How does it compare to the salmon and the duck?

Only the first ingredient changes. Chicken liver, pea protein, tapioca starch, fish oil at 0.5% and guar gum sit behind the named meat in all of them, and the analysis and the taurine level are identical across the range.

Is 8% protein low for a cat treat?

It looks low and it is not, because the paste is 88% water. A wet paste and a dry biscuit cannot be compared on the label figure at all. What it does mean is that a pouch is mostly moisture, which is useful for a cat who does not drink much.

Can I use it to give a tablet?

People do, and the texture suits it. The label makes no claim about it, so treat that as a practical use rather than something the maker promises.

Is there anything artificial in it?

The published composition is six items long and the only declared additive is taurine at 1000mg per kg. There is no colour, sweetener or preservative in the list we have.
