When will my dog be in season?

Enter your female dog’s size and when her last season started for an estimate of her next season (heat) — so you can be ready with nappies and plan ahead. Add a free calendar reminder in one tap.

This is an estimate, not a guarantee. Every dog is different and cycles can be irregular — especially in the first couple of years. If you’re thinking about breeding, health or spaying, speak to your vet.

How often do dogs come into season?

Most female dogs come into season roughly twice a year — about every six months — but it varies a lot with size. As a general guide:

  • Small breeds can cycle more often — sometimes every 4–6 months
  • Medium breeds tend to be around every 6–7 months
  • Large and giant breeds are often less frequent — every 8–12 months, and some giant breeds only once a year

A first season usually happens around six months of age in smaller dogs, but can be much later in large and giant breeds (sometimes 18–24 months). Early cycles are often irregular, so predictions get more reliable once she’s settled into a pattern.

A season itself lasts about 2–4 weeks. The bleeding (proestrus) phase is roughly the first 7–10 days, and she’s typically most fertile in the second half — so keep her away from un-neutered males throughout. Absorbent female dog nappies keep your home clean during the bleeding phase.
