Organic dog treats

A genuinely organic dog treat, in the strict legal sense, is one made with ingredients certified under a recognised UK or EU organic standard, such as Soil Association certification — and honestly, that is a small niche within the wider treat market. If you are looking specifically for that certification, it is worth knowing upfront that our range leans toward natural and minimally processed treats rather than certified-organic ones.

What 'organic' actually means on a pet product

In the UK, 'organic' is a legally protected term for food, and a genuine organic certification means the ingredients were produced under a recognised organic farming standard, with an independent body verifying the claim. For pet products specifically, that kind of independently certified organic treat is much less common than 'organic' marketing language on packaging might suggest.

It is worth distinguishing organic from 'natural', which is a much more loosely used term without a single legal certification behind it. A treat can be genuinely natural — a short ingredients list, minimal processing, no artificial additives — without carrying formal organic certification, and the two are often confused.

What we can honestly offer instead

We do not currently stock treats carrying formal organic certification. What we do stock is a range of natural and single-ingredient treats — dried fish, tripe and other simple chews with nothing added — which share the short-ingredients-list appeal that draws people to organic products, even without the formal certification behind them.

If certified-organic specifically matters to you, it is worth checking any product's own labelling carefully rather than assuming a 'natural' or 'grain-free' claim means the same thing, since none of those terms are interchangeable with genuine organic certification.

Choosing a treat on what actually matters

Whether or not a treat is certified organic, the things that matter most for your dog are a short, recognisable ingredients list, a portion size appropriate for their weight, and a treat that fits within the small proportion of their daily food that treats should ever make up.

A natural, single-ingredient chew is a reasonable way to meet most of what people are actually looking for when they search for organic treats — simplicity and minimal processing — even without the specific certification.

Common questions

Do you sell certified organic dog treats?
No, we do not currently stock treats carrying formal organic certification. We stock a range of natural and single-ingredient treats instead, which share much of the simplicity appeal without the formal certification behind the word 'organic'.
Is 'natural' the same as 'organic' on dog treats?
No, they are different things. Organic is a legally protected term backed by independent certification, while natural is a much more loosely used description without one single legal standard behind it. A treat can be natural without being certified organic, and the two are often confused.
Are natural dog treats a good alternative to organic ones?
For most of what people are actually looking for — a short ingredients list and minimal processing — yes, natural single-ingredient treats offer much of that appeal. They are simply not certified under a formal organic standard, which matters only if that specific certification is what you need.
How do I know if a treat is genuinely organic?
Check the packaging for an actual certification mark or statement, such as Soil Association certification, rather than relying on the word 'organic' appearing in the product name or marketing copy alone. A genuine certification is independently verified rather than a description the manufacturer applies itself.
Why don't more dog treats carry organic certification?
Organic certification adds cost and administrative requirements throughout the supply chain, from farming through to manufacturing, which makes certified products a smaller and typically pricier part of the market. Most treat manufacturers focus instead on natural or minimally processed claims, which are cheaper to achieve but carry no single formal standard behind them.
