If you do buy it, use the tone. The sound setting is a marker a cat can learn from, and it carries none of the fallout of the static function. Rule out illness first, then work out what the meowing is asking for, whether that is food timing, a closed door, an empty bowl or boredom at four in the morning, because that is what actually stops it.
