How Long Do Cockapoos Live? Lifespan & Health
Cockapoos live around 12–15 years. What this Cocker Spaniel × Poodle cross can inherit, the ear and eye care it needs, and why health-tested parents matter.

The Cockapoo — a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle (usually Miniature or Toy) — is one of the UK's most popular companion dogs. As a cross, its health is best understood by looking at what it can inherit from both parent breeds. Here's how long Cockapoos live, what to watch for, and why the breeder you choose matters so much.
How long do Cockapoos live?
Cockapoos typically live to around 12–15 years. As a small-to-medium crossbreed they tend to be fairly long-lived, and the genetic diversity of a first-cross can bring some "hybrid vigour". But a Cockapoo can still inherit the health conditions of either parent, so its lifespan and health depend heavily on the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle it comes from — which is why responsible, health-testing breeding is everything with this cross.
What a Cockapoo can inherit
Because it's a Cocker × Poodle cross, the conditions to be aware of come from both sides:
- Eye conditions — both parent breeds can pass on progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), for which there's a reliable DNA test, plus cataracts and glaucoma. A good breeder eye-tests and DNA-tests the parents.
- Ear infections — both Cockers and Poodles have long, hairy, floppy ears that trap moisture, so the Cockapoo is prone to ear trouble and needs regular checking and drying.
- Hip dysplasia and patellar luxation (slipping kneecaps), seen in both parent breeds.
- Familial nephropathy (a kidney condition) from the Cocker side, and conditions such as epilepsy or Addison's disease from the Poodle side, both DNA-testable in the parents.
The single most important thing you can do is choose a breeder who health-tests both parents (eyes, hips and the relevant DNA tests) — it's the best predictor of a healthy, long-lived Cockapoo, and it matters far more than a low price.
Are Cockapoos hypoallergenic?
It's the question every prospective owner asks. The honest answer: no breed or cross is truly hypoallergenic, including the Cockapoo. Many are low-shedding, inheriting the Poodle's coat, and some allergy sufferers tolerate them better than heavier-shedding breeds — but it varies a lot from dog to dog depending on which parent's coat they take after, and they still produce the dander and saliva proteins that trigger most allergies. If allergies are a concern, spend time around the specific dog or its parents before committing.
Weight, coat and everyday care
Cockapoos love their food and gain weight easily, so keeping them lean protects their joints and overall health. The coat needs regular grooming to prevent matting (see our grooming guide), and the ears need a simple weekly check-and-dry routine to head off infections. Keep on top of teeth and nails as part of the same routine.
Helping your Cockapoo live well
- Choose a health-tested puppy — with a cross, this is the biggest single factor.
- Keep them lean — easy to over-feed a food-loving dog.
- Care for the ears — check and dry them regularly.
- Groom regularly and see your vet for yearly checks, more often as they age.
When to see your vet
Book a check if you notice ear odour, redness or head-shaking, eye cloudiness or vision changes, limping, increased thirst or lethargy, or any sudden change. Catching the breed's common ear and eye issues early keeps them minor.

Common questions
How long do Cockapoos live?
Cockapoos typically live to around 12–15 years. As a small-to-medium crossbreed they tend to be fairly long-lived, helped by the genetic diversity of a first-cross. But they can inherit conditions from either parent breed, so lifespan depends heavily on the health of the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle they come from — a health-tested puppy, a lean body weight and regular vet care all help yours reach the upper end.
Are Cockapoos hypoallergenic?
No breed or cross is truly hypoallergenic, including the Cockapoo — though many shed very little, inheriting the Poodle's coat, and some allergy sufferers tolerate them better than heavier-shedding breeds. It varies from dog to dog depending on which parent's coat they take after, and they still produce the dander and saliva proteins that cause reactions. If allergies matter, spend time around the specific dog or its parents first.
What health problems are Cockapoos prone to?
Because it's a Cocker × Poodle cross, a Cockapoo can inherit issues from both: eye conditions such as PRA (DNA-testable), ear infections (those floppy, hairy ears), hip dysplasia and patellar luxation, plus familial nephropathy from the Cocker side and conditions like epilepsy or Addison's from the Poodle side. Hybrid vigour helps, but the best safeguard is choosing a breeder who health-tests both parents.
